Frasier has re-entered the building

Frasier has re-entered the building

Get ready for tossed salads and scrambled eggs aplenty, as 2023’s most hotly anticipated TV revival hits screens exclusively on Paramount+

By Charlotte Briggs, Staff Writer

You read that right. Thirty years after its debut, US sitcom Frasier is returning with 10 brand new episodes. And if that wasn’t exciting enough, multi-award-winning actor and Broadway sensation Kelsey Grammer will be reprising his role as the sitcom’s titular character. Woohoo!

Beginning as a spin-off to one of history’s most successful sitcoms, Cheers, the first run of Frasier followed the misadventures of Dr Frasier Crane (Grammer) in his hometown of Seattle, Washington. The therapist spent his time solving other people’s problems on his phone-in radio show, while actively avoiding his own and fighting with his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), their father Martin (the late John Mahoney) and Martin’s dog Eddie.

Coming along for the ride were Martin’s “psychic” physiotherapist Daphne Moon (Jane Leeves), Frasier’s strong-willed producer Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin), and occasionally Frasier’s ex-wife Lilith Sternin (Bebe Neuwirth) and their son Frederick “Freddy” Crane (Trevor Einhorn).

Now, an ensemble cast of faces old and new is accompanying Frasier on his latest escapade in Boston, Massachusetts, where his character was first introduced on Cheers nearly four decades ago. But more on that later.

Raise a glass with Frasier and all his friends from Friday 13 October, when the first two episodes of the 10-episode season will drop exclusively on Paramount+. For now, let us answer your burning questions ahead of the Frasier revival and why you should be tuning in.

Is it true that Nicholas Lyndhurst is in it?

Yepp! Along with the return of titular star Kelsey Grammer, Nicholas Lyndhurst (aka Only Fools And Horses’ Rodney Trotter) is joining the show as Frasier’s long-time friend and university professor, Alan Cornwall.

Frasier fans should keep their eyes peeled for appearances from Peri Gilpin (Roz) and Bebe Neuwirth (Lilith) too, while other original cast members David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves and the late John Mahoney won’t be returning.

Plus, joining Frasier for his next exciting adventure are Jack Cutmore-Scott (Oppenheimer) as Freddy, Jess Salgueiro (Workin’ Moms), Toks Olagundoye (The Rookie) and newcomer Anders Keith.

So, what’s in store for Frasier himself?

As we already know, the revival sees Frasier return to Boston to navigate the next chapter of his life. But he’s not about to walk through the hallowed doors of the Cheers bar – he’s on a mission to fulfil an old dream or two and reconnect with his now 30-something son Freddy (Cutmore-Scott).

And how Frasier will interact with his now grown-up nephew David Crane (Keith), Freddy’s roommate Eve (Salgueiro) and Alan’s colleague Olivia (Olagundoye) remains a mystery that we can’t wait to unravel.

What can I expect from this revival?

The new Frasier will stay true to its roots – up to a point. An older and now wiser Dr Crane is now dealing with a new generation, but viewers can look forward to the same comedic prowess, laugh-out-loud wisecracks and refreshing self-awareness that made the first run so timeless.

And with an experienced and reliable cast and crew – Cheers’ co-creator James Burrow (Will & Grace, Friends) has directed the first two episodes – we have no doubt that this revival will capture that same sitcom magic of its predecessor through a refreshing modern lens.

Do I need to watch Cheers and the original Frasier series first?

Of course not – but we’d highly recommend it. Not only do the shows have a collective total of 65 (!!) Emmy awards and more than 200 nominations, Cheers and Frasier have regularly topped worldwide polls as the best sitcoms ever created. In fact, Frasier still holds the record for most Emmy wins for a comedy series. And you can find every episode of both shows on Paramount+ right now.

When is Frasier on TV?

You can tune into the first 2 episodes of the 10-episode season from Friday 13 October exclusively on Paramount+. New episodes will then be available on Paramount+ every Thursday.
