What’s Framing Britney Spears about?

This new documentary takes an unflinching look at singer Britney Spears’ treatment by the press following her rise to global stardom in the late 1990s. It also examines the events leading up to the controversial appointment of Spears’ father as her conservator after the pop star’s public breakdown in 2007.

What is a conservator?

In US law, a conservator is appointed to take care of another person – and their financial dealings – when that person is deemed incapable of looking after themselves. Spears’ father, Jamie, has been her conservator for the past 12 years. The singer recently filed court papers in an attempt to have the details of their legal arrangements made public.

What’s been the reaction to the documentary?

After its American premiere at the beginning of February, Framing Britney Spears has been praised for its exploration of how female stars are treated by the media and of our collective fascination with Spears. It’s also led to some self-reflection from those who have played key roles in the Spears saga.

Spears’ former boyfriend Justin Timberlake has apologised for past actions that “contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right.” Meanwhile, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton and Glamour magazine are among those who have also expressed their remorse for being part of the lurid media ecosystem that hounded Spears for so long.
