Take a bite out of Apple & Onion

Take a bite out of Apple & Onion

Richard Ayoade lends his voice to this sur-really funny cartoon

This fish-out-of-water story about an apple and an onion making their way in the big city is the stuff that really, really weird dreams are made of…

Apple & Onion, weekdays from Monday 27 August, 10am and 5.30pm, Cartoon Network/HD (CH 704/732). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Cartoon Network

We would love to have been in the room when this show got pitched. Best friends Apple and Onion live in a world of anthropomorphic food. Together, they’ve moved to a new pad (owned by their landlord; a falafel) in a new city, and face a medley of challenges and adventures as an adorable team. A team that would make a really delicious chutney.

This is one of those cartoons that kids will learn loads from, but which is destined to also become a cult hit among grown-ups, similar to Adventure Time, Regular Show and SpongeBob SquarePants. Here’s why everyone is going to adore Apple & Onion

Richard Ayoade, Stephen Fry and Adam Buxton are all in it

Richard Ayoade

Well, their voices are. Ayoade is the voice of Onion, while Fry and Buxton play Onion and Apple’s respective fathers. It’s a BAFTA-winning, comedy dream team.

Its creator is something of an industry legend

George Gendi – who is also the voice of Apple – has got quite the CV. He’s worked on such esteemed animations as Children’s BAFTA-winning The Amazing World Of Gumball, plus Sanjay And Craig.

The songs are amazing

Check out this absolute banger about making the big bucks in a pizzeria…

The son from Bob’s Burgers plays a burger

Bob's Burgers

Eugene Mirman – who provides the voice of Gene Belcher in Bob’s Burgers (and who you may recognise from Flight Of The Conchords) has really found his niche. He’s got a rare monopoly on cartoons about burgers, and he knows how to work it.

It’s packed with positive messages

It’s not just about the amusing musical numbers, bright colours and quirky jokes. This tune about saving water is educational and fun to sing along to…
