World Environment Day documentaries, on us

For World Environment Day on Wednesday 6 June, join us for a celebration of Planet Earth with a selection of documentaries, at no extra cost

By Virgin TV Edit

Land sustains life on Earth. Farmlands, forests, savannahs and even mountains provide us with the goods and services that make civilization possible, while aquatic ecosystems maintain the water cycles that keep land fertile. But both are under threat.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day, an annual celebration of our planet, is restoration. It’s a chance to shine a spotlight on solutions for restoring land, halting desertification and building drought resilience.

To raise awareness of these important issues, all Virgin TV customers can tune into Virgin TV Showcase (CH 100) on Wednesday 5 June and Thursday 6 June to watch a curated selection of documentaries from Sky Nature and Virgin TV Ultra HD, at no extra cost.

Around 3.2 billion people, or 40% of the world’s population, are affected by land degradation. And if this remains unchecked, it could reduce global food productivity by 12%, causing food prices to soar by up to 30 per cent by 2040.

We’re committed to achieving zero waste operations and products by 2025 with a series of commitments, including making sure over 95% of operational waste is recycled and ensuring less than 5% goes to incineration. We’ll also take a “reuse first” approach to our branded products and rely less on raw materials in new products.

In this episode, Joakim travels to Costa Rica on a shark-tagging expedition.

Thursday 6 June

From 7pm, Virgin TV Showcase (CH 100). Episode 1 is at 7pm. Episode 2 is at 8pm. Episode 3 is at 9pm

Settle down to enjoy the epic three-part series Earth’s Eternal Wonders, taking you to fascinating locations that give unique insights into the history of the formation of our planet in very different ways, and how they will change in the future. Each episode takes you to three of the world’s most renowned and breathtaking places: the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, Halong Bay off the north-eastern coast of Vietnam and finally the natural splendours of Iceland.

Be part of the solution

You can help get devices back into circulation by clearing out old electronics from drawers, cupboards and garages. It’s a win-win – for you, and for our planet.

Did you know…

  • You could make money by selling your old devices
  • You could pass a device on to someone who needs it, making a huge difference to their life
  • Simply passing a device on to a family member or friend who could benefit from it, rather than hoarding it, gives devices a second life
  • Properly recycling any truly broken items keeps them out of landfill where harmful materials could leach into the ground and waterways
