From writing an idea for what would later become Harry Potter on a napkin mid-train ride to becoming a household name and multimillionaire, author JK Rowling had quite the journey. But she never forgot her fans, writing the screenplay for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and the sequel as an homage to her fans.

Speaking in Paris at the premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, Rowling told reporters: “Their loyalty and passion for these stories really is the reason that I went back. Without that I don’t think I would have written these movies.” And with even more magic, mayhem and mystery in the sequel, you’ll be glad that she came back for more.

Picking up where the last film ended, the sequel finds the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) locked up in prison. But it’s not long before he escapes; putting the lives of non-magic types at risk. Like Magneto in X-Men, he’s a man with extraordinary powers on a mission to assert dominance over those without them.

His villainous leanings put him on a direct collision course with a young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) – or, if you ask Twitter, “DumbleDAMN” – who enlists his former student, Newton Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), to help thwart Grindelwald’s wicked plans.

Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom, as the loveable, mishchievous Nifflers are back to break up all that dark magic! And there’s more brilliant beasties to admire, including Grindelwald’s bloodthirsty pet Chupacabra, and the aquatic demon Kelpie, which manifests as a horse in order to trick its victims. According to legend, the latter can be commandeered if approached with caution. Good luck with that one, Newt…

Another three Fantastic Beasts films are in the works, with the third due to be released in 2020. Rowling has hinted that the films will all be set before 1945 – the year the Second World War ended. To say more would mean major spoilers!
