Your guide to the McConaissance

Your guide to the McConaissance

We take a look at Matthew McConaughey’s varied career as Serenity comes to Sky Cinema

If ever there was a time before Matthew McConaughey graced our screens, we’re damned if we haven’t forgotten it…

Serenity, available from Friday 1 March on Sky Cinema On Demand. Cert 15. Also available in HD

First came the bit parts in acclaimed films. Then came the leading roles in bigger, even better films. And then came the years spent making us laugh and swoon in equal measure in some of cinema’s greatest romcoms.

Then (to the surprise of, well, just about everyone really) came one of the most unexpected milestones in this ace actor’s career… the McConaissance – made real when Hollywood’s favourite Texan thespian finally bagged himself an Academy Award for Best Actor.

And now, after many more critically acclaimed performances, the man, myth, the McConaissance himself is (again) coming to a telly screen near you, as Serenity arrives on Sky Cinema.

Written and directed by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, Serenity is a good old-fashioned noir-ish thriller, with McConaughey perfectly cast as Blake, a fisherman trying to escape his past.

But when his ex-wife (Anne Hathaway) tracks him down, a chain of events is set in motion that forces Blake to confront his past, present and future all at once, with consequences as thrilling as they are shocking.

And while Serenity is undoubtedly well worth your time, it’s merely the latest addition to McConaughey’s long and distinguished career. As such, to celebrate his best (and, well, slightly less best) moments, we’ve rustled up a handy graphic so that you can look back on the films that led to the glorious epoch known henceforth as the McConaissance.
