At this time of year, unmissable sporting action is as traditional as turkey and trees – so here are the thrilling events you can catch live on BT Sport over the month
BT Sport December round-up
OK, we know you’ve got to think about Christmas, and make sure you’re dropping all the right hints about what you want to unwrap on the 25th – but it’s far from the only exciting event in December. And while you might have vague plans to go carol singing and bake mince pies from scratch, in reality it’s time to relax, switch on the telly and treat yourself to loads of brilliant live sport.
This month, look no further than BT Sport. The football action is ramping up, with everything from the World Club Championship to the first cup final of the Scottish season, via the usual abundance of European and domestic fixtures. And that’s not all – with huge boxing, rugby union and cricket events hitting your screens before the New Year celebrations commence, it’s a festive feast worthy of your Christmas Day table.
Thursday 19 December to Wednesday 25 December
The big day looms… No, not that one – it’s the FIFA World Club Championship final! As European champions, Liverpool will be pausing their pursuit of the Premier League title to take on continental champs from around the world in Qatar.
It’s tempting to assume that this final will be a predictable meeting of the European and South American champions, but that’s not always the case. In just the past six years, Raja Casablanca of Morocco, Japan’s Kashima Antlers and Al-Ain of the UAE have contested finals against the traditional giants of the world game. So Monterrey or Tunis could definitely spring a surprise this time.
This mini-tournament is also a great chance to see Qatar’s shiny new stadiums ahead of next year’s World Cup, so there’s interest aplenty…

New Year’s Day holds so much promise. Possibilities. Potential. Hope. In theory, that is. In reality, after spending ten days stuffing yourself with roast potatoes, Stilton and Quality Street, then getting through a startling amount of post-midnight prosecco on New Year’s Eve, all you have the energy for is camping out on the sofa and watching footy. Well, BT Sport has some good news: it’s showing every single one of the day’s nine Premier League matches live. And although you can’t actually watch all of them consecutively live, you can certainly watch four live games in a row – and who could ask for more than that?
So whether you want to watch Frank Lampard’s youthful Chelsea take on wily Graham Potter’s Brighton, witness plenty of attacking verve as West Ham face Bournemouth, find out if Everton can resist the fearsome power of the champions at Goodison, or see Manchester United and Arsenal trying to reproduce the thrills of their epic early-noughties clashes, the choice is absolutely yours. Happy New Year!
