The game that stops the world

Ahead of El Clásico, which superstars have made our Real Madrid and Barcelona combined XI?

It’s the most star-studded game in club football – so surely a combined Barcelona and Real Madrid XI would see off all comers. Read on to find out which players make it into our team…

Saturday 23 December, 11.30am, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH513/503) + Sky Sports Main Event/HD (CH 511/501)

Fans can argue about football’s greatest league, but there is no debate about the sport’s biggest club fixture. Forget Manchester United v Liverpool or Celtic v Rangers, Real Madrid taking on Barcelona is the game to end all games.

“El Clásico is the biggest game on Earth at club level,” states former Barcelona striker Thierry Henry. “I can only compare it to the World Cup final or European Cup final, because when they are on, there is no other game on around the world. That is what El Clásico feels like."

This feeling is partly due the fierce rivalry between the clubs, their home cities and their supporters – but mainly to the stars who collide on the field.

In the past the team’s line-ups have included Dutch masters like Johan Cruyff, Patrick Kluivert and Ronald Koeman, galácticos like Roberto Carlos, David Beckham and Luis Figo and World Cup winners including Xavi, Zinédine Zidane and Ronaldinho.

In the present, they include a parade of extraordinarily talented superstars, headed by five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and, er, five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

The two finest footballers of their generation would clearly make any team on the planet. But which of their colleagues would join them in a combined Real Madrid and Barcelona XI? The debate begins here. Click/hover on the shirts below to see who's in, and then begin to get excited about watching the greatest club football match in the world live on Sky Sports on Virgin TV.
