Harry Kane in action

Can Spurs silence the Kop?

Can Spurs silence the Kop?

Buckle up and prepare for action as Tottenham travel to Liverpool for a huge Premier League clash

Focus shifts to two of the Premier League’s most entertaining sides, as the race to finish in the top four starts to heat up

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur, Sunday 4 February, 4.15pm, Sky Sports Premier League/HD (CH 512/502)

Hungry for goals? Then boy, do two of the Premier League’s top-four contenders have a treat in store for you. Not only have Liverpool and Tottenham each struck the net more than 40 times in this season’s Premier League, they also have an impressive history of finding each other’s goals. In fact, if you look back on the last 20 Premier League encounters between the sides, you discover that they’ve contained a whopping 59 goals.

“Liverpool are a great team that always think about going forward and playing exciting attacking football,” says Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. This is true, but the approach didn’t do the Reds much good when they travelled to face Tottenham at Wembley back in October. On that day, Spurs ran riot with Harry Kane scoring two goals in a 4-1 win.

“Nobody should feel good,” blasted Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp after that harrowing 90 minutes for his team. “We had chances, but you can’t get results with a performance like this against a team like Tottenham.”

At that stage, Liverpool were ninth in the table, but after going through November and December unbeaten, the Anfield side now find themselves well and truly in the scrap for a top-four finish.

“This season nobody is really fighting for the title,” says Klopp. “We will all try, but if Manchester City don’t have any drop then they will probably win. But that doesn’t mean we stop. To be the best of the rest is a fantastic target.”

The fact that Klopp is even considering this is due to Mohamed Salah’s ability to hit the target on the pitch. Liverpool’s Egyptian forward has notched 17 Premier League goals so far this season to sit second in the top scorer’s table. The £36.7m that the Reds dished out for Salah in the summer is starting to look like a snip.

But Salah has competition to finish the campaign as the Premier League’s top marksman. Tottenham’s Harry Kane has bagged 18 Premier League goals already this season and he is definitely the man who can fire Spurs to their first league win at Anfield since 2011. “He is a great example for everybody,” says Pochettino. “I think today he’s the number one striker in the world.”
