Say goodbye to 2019 and hello to 2020 with all of this live action on Sky Sports and BT Sport
Got room for even more football, rugby, cricket and darts? Sorry, silly question…
New Year sport round-up
As December turns into January, you can be sure some things will stay the same. We’re talking, of course, about all the unmissable drama on Sky Sports and BT Sport!
The big news is BT Sport will be showing nine (yes, nine) live Premier League matches on New Year’s Day, including champions Manchester City’s clash with Everton and a biggie at the Emirates between Arsenal and Manchester United.
But it’s not just top-flight football to look out for, because with the second Test between England and South Africa, a feisty derby in the Gallagher Premiership and an unmissable showdown at the top of the Sky Bet Championship, the action isn’t about to let up.
Here, we pick out the best of what’s on the box, so raid the fridge, grab the best spot on the sofa and get ready for sport, sport and even more sport…
Brighton & Hove Albion v Chelsea

New Year’s Day, kick-off 12.30pm, BT Sport
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea start 2020 on the south coast, taking on Brighton at the Amex. A top-four finish is on the cards for the visitors, but could a strong opening to the year see them stake a claim as title contenders? Watch this space.
West Bromwich Albion v Leeds United
New Year’s Day, kick-off 5pm, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 503/513)
The race for promotion to the Premier League hots up at the Hawthorns, where high-flyers West Brom and Leeds go head to head. The Baggies will be out for sweet revenge after falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat away to their rivals at the start of October.
Manchester City v Everton

New Year’s Day, kick-off 5.30pm, BT Sport
City’s quest for a fifth Premier League title continues at home to Everton. Pep Guardiola’s side can barely afford to drop any more points this season, but they’ll need to be on their toes against an Everton team that’s made unpredictability their calling card.
William Hill World Darts Championship Final
New Year’s Day, 7.15pm, Sky Sports Main Event/HD (CH 511/501)
It’s the big one. In one of the great New Year sporting traditions, which tungsten-throwing titan will seize the moment at Ally Pally and write their name into darts folklore? Expect tension, drama, nail-biting excitement and lots of daft fancy dress among the rambunctious crowd.
Arsenal v Manchester United

New Year’s Day, kick-off 8pm, BT Sport
They may not be competing for the title these days, but there’s still plenty of needle when the Gunners and the Red Devils square off. As the tussle for UEFA Champions League qualification grinds on, three points would do wonders for both of these rivals.
Liverpool v Sheffield United
Thursday 2 January, kick-off 8pm, BT Sport 1 HD (CH 527)
Is there any stopping Jürgen Klopp’s Reds? Sheffield United came close in September, before Gini Wijnaldum’s goal earned the Merseysiders a vital victory at Bramall Lane. Having already taken points off Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal this season, the Blades will be looking for another scalp at Anfield.
South Africa v England: 2nd Test

Friday 3 January, 7.30am, Sky Sports Cricket/HD (CH 514/504)
England’s tour of South Africa resumes at Newlands Cricket Ground with the second match in their four-Test series. With new coach Chris Silverwood at the helm, a win here would give captain Joe Root’s tourists a major boost.
Gloucester Rugby v Bath
Saturday 4 January, kick-off 3pm, BT Sport 1 HD (CH 527)
Get ready for 80 minutes of hard-hitting derby action at Kingsholm, when Gloucester entertain local rivals Bath in the Gallagher Premiership. The hosts won last season’s clash here 27-23 following a remarkable 31-31 draw at the Rec. Basically, all signs point to a thriller.
