Will Ronnie make snooker history?

The Rocket takes on the sport’s best as he looks for a record seventh UK Championship title

Can Ronnie O’Sullivan add to his snooker legend, or is it time for another player to step forward for their big break?

Live coverage from Saturday 1 December, 1.15pm, BBC One/HD (CH 101/108) + 4.30pm, BBC Two/HD (CH 102/162) + 4pm, Eurosport 1/HD (CH 523/521)

The walled city of York. Founded by the ancient Romans, it is a place where virtually every nook and cranny is filled with history. This December, another piece of history may about to be witnessed – in snooker terms at least – as the York Barbican plays host to the Betway UK Championship.

It’s defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan who has that extra incentive of setting a new record. After he equalled Steve Davis’ haul of six UK Championship titles by seeing off Shaun Murphy in the final last year, one more would put him clear in the all-time lead, writing yet another brilliant chapter in his illustrious snooker career.

After a shocking second-round defeat in the World Championship in April, though, Ronnie’s record is by no means a sure thing. On the other hand, who else will mount a serious challenge? Consistency has eluded all the top players this year, with no one able to put together the kind of run that makes us think they’ll stake a claim to O’Sullivan’s crown.

We’ve rounded up the players who will be looking to turn their fortunes around and stop the Rocket. From the seasoned pros to the young upstarts, these are the contenders…
