Motorsport: MotoGP

We’ve seen some close battles in the MotoGP championship and this season’s is as thrilling as any. While Pecco Bagnaia has won significantly more races than Jorge Martín (eight to three) and they both have 12 podium finishes, Martín’s incredible consistency – top four in every race but three, and only two retirements – has put him 10 points ahead of his Italian rival going into the final stretch of 2024.

There are three races ahead in the Pacific Rim leg of the season: neither rider has had any wins in Australia previously, and while Martín won last year’s Thai MotoGP, Bagnaia has claimed two MotoGP victories in Malaysia – so history’s not telling us much about what might happen. There’s a good chance this highly competitive season won’t be decided before the final race in Valencia, with Martín back on home turf. See all the action on TNT Sports.

Motorsport: Rallying + Touring

Heading into the penultimate round of the World Rally Championship season the title is Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe’s to lose, with a healthy lead over their main rivals, Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja. It’s the second staging of the Central European Rally (taking place across Germany, Austria and Czechia) and Neuville and Wydaeghe won the first in 2023, so they’ll be full of confidence going into this event. The final round is in Japan at the end of November.

In Supercars, Will Brown put in a dominant performance at Sandown – pole, fastest lap and race win – and is the favourite to win his first championship, but it’s not over yet as the teams head for Gold Coast.

Football: Premier League

Over the past couple of years Aston Villa have risen from relegation candidates to Champions League participants. After a disappointingly tame end to 2023/24 when they went from title contenders to third place, Liverpool surged to the top of the Premier League early this season. Credit to both clubs for making shrewd managerial appointments in Unai Emery and Arne Slot, both of whom provided a shot in the arm – and we’re sure the relative misfortunes of their local rivals has made that success all the sweeter. These two exciting sides meet at Anfield on 9 November, live on TNT Sports.

Ahead of that, there’s a London derby when West Ham visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Newcastle entertain Arsenal with hopes of disrupting the title race again.

Football: UEFA Champions League

The new Champions League format has changed teams’ approach to this phase of the competition. Without the home-and-away cycle, it seems some of the lower-ranked clubs haven’t had the must-not-lose attitude seen on their travels in the past. The result? Lots of goals, including nine for Bayern Munich against Dinamo Zagreb on Matchday 1. Celtic have been on both ends of that, putting five past Slovan Bratislava at home, but then conceding seven in Dortmund.

A quarter of the way through the league stage, nothing’s clear yet – we doubt anyone was expecting to see Brest and Benfica near the top of the table, with AC Milan and RB Leipzig pointless. It’s fascinating, frankly, and we’re gripped. Big games coming up on TNT Sports include Liverpool at Leipzig, Barcelona v Bayern, Real Madrid v AC Milan and Arsenal’s trip to Inter. Stay tuned to this brilliant competition.

Football: UEFA Europa League

Five teams registered two wins in their first two games in this season’s Europa League, including big names Lazio and Lyon. Spurs are among that leading pack too, seeing off Ferencváros and Qarabag, as are their 1984 UEFA Cup final opponents Anderlecht (one for the young fans there). The final team on six points is FCSB, a successor club to Steaua Bucharest – European champs in 1986 – and Rangers have the daunting task of facing them at home on Matchday 3.

If they’re going to get into an automatic qualification spot, Man Utd have plenty of work to do after two draws – although the epic comeback against Porto with 10 players should give them a boost as they go into matches against PAOK and, first, Fenerbahçe… where they’ll come up against their former boss and arch-provocateur José Mourinho. Should be fun.

Football: UEFA Conference League

In the Conference League’s Matchday 2, Chelsea face probably the hardest away trip possible in this competition when they travel to Greek giants Panathinaikos, where the Olympic Stadium always has a fervid atmosphere. After a comfortable 4-2 win over Gent, the Londoners will look to take control of this tournament for which they are overwhelming favourites. Next up, FC Noah of Armenia.

In their European competition debut, The New Saints gave a decent account of themselves in Florence, where they lost only 2-0. With a home game against Astana of Kazakhstan and then a short hop over the Irish Sea to play Shamrock Rovers, they’ll aim to have points on the board soon. Hearts have home matches against Omonia (Cyprus) and Heidenheim, while Larne also have a home double-header against Shamrock and Swiss side St Gallen.

Football: UEFA Women’s Champions League

TNT Sports is showing a live match from every round of Women’s Champions League games this season, and on Matchday 1 viewers were rewarded with a superb performance from Manchester City as they beat the holders Barcelona 2-0. Up next it’s newly managerless Arsenal, whose 5-2 defeat to Bayern last time out added to the pressure on boss Jonas Eidevall, who resigned the following week.

The misfiring Gunners will be glad to have a home match, although it’s against Vålerenga of Norway – Champions League debutants admittedly, but a strong team who are well clear at the top of their domestic table. The next live game hasn’t been selected yet but we’re hoping to see the all-British clash between Chelsea and Celtic.

Group C: Arsenal v Vålerenga

Football: Serie A

It might be early days, but so far the Napoli of 2024/25 are looking more like the scudetto-winning side of 2023 than last season’s disappointing team (they finished 10th). With Antonio Conte installed as their new boss, they’ve hit the top of the Serie A table, thanks in part to their Scottish midfield duo of Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour.

They’ve already beaten Champions League qualifiers Bologna and taken a point from Juventus away, so they’ll be steeled for the tougher tests to come. This month you can see them away at Empoli and then at home to Europa League winners Atalanta on TNT Sports. There’s also the Derby d’Italia between Inter and Juve on 27 October.

Football: NWSL

Kansas City Current joined the NWSL in 2021 – the previous KC team, FC Kansas City, became defunct in 2017 – and made their mark by constructing the first purpose-built women’s football stadium anywhere in the world. Clearly an inspiration to Brighton & Hove Albion of the WSL, who have applied to build the first in Europe. Roared on by their fans and inspired by the brilliance of their Malawian forward Temwa Chawinga (19 goals, six assists), the Current had a great season and will be in the play-offs.

Check them out against San Diego Wave, live on TNT Sports on 19 October. The Wave are in live action again on the final weekend of the regular season against Racing Louisville, and you can also see Angel City (co-owned by Natalie Portman, Jessica Chastain, Serena Williams and other big names) against Utah Royals.

Rugby Union: Premiership

Ahead of the internationals, there are some crucial Premiership matches: Bristol and Saracens set the early pace this season, both scoring three wins from four games with some useful bonus points, and they’ll meet at Ashton Gate for a crunch clash on 19 October. The Bears’ US international fly-half AJ McGinty has been deadly with his kicking, while Max Malins and Gabriel Ibitoye have scored the tries – Ibitoye going over three times in the thrilling 40-35 win at Exeter. Other contenders who meet this month are Bath and Sale, who face off at the Recreation Ground on 26 October.

Rugby Union: Premiership Cup

The new format for the Premiership Cup in 2023/24 was certainly successful for Championship side Ealing Trailfinders, who finished top of a pool that contained Premiership giants Northampton and Bristol. It was part of a successful season for the west London club, who won the Championship title – although they were denied promotion for administrative reasons. The Trailfinders will welcome their tie against Harlequins as another chance to show what they can do.

Pool C: Harlequins v Ealing Trailfinders

Rugby Union: Women’s Premiership

Gloucester-Hartpury and Saracens were the top two in last year’s final Premiership table and there’s every chance that’ll happen again after they started the new season in dominant form. Sarries trounced Loughborough 48-7 and then racked up 52 points against Ealing Trailfinders – as did Gloucester against Leicester, before a harder-fought but defensively impressive 12-0 win over Bristol.

The rivalry between these two is one for the ages, so their upcoming clash at Saracens’ StoneX Stadium is one to savour. There are four live fixtures coming up on TNT Sports this month, so don’t miss any of the action.

The matches come thick and fast at this time of year, especially in the subcontinent, where Sri Lanka’s white-ball team are hosting West Indies while India face New Zealand in three Test matches. And as soon as West Indies are done in Sri Lanka they’re heading home for ODIs and T20s against England, for whom none of the players involved in October’s memorable Test series against Pakistan are included in Jos Buttler’s squad. Baseball: Major League Baseball

When two New York teams meet in the World Series it’s known as a Subway Series, and it’s only happened once since the founding of the New York Mets in 1962. That was in 2000, when the Yankees ran out comfortable 4-1 winners. But there’s a pretty good chance we’ll get another Subway Series this year, with the teams from the Big Apple among the most impressive in Major League Baseball this season.

The Mets would love to get one over on their noisy neighbours with their record 27 World Series wins – but they’ll have to get past the LA Dodgers first. For the Yankees, their American League Championship opponents are the Cleveland Guardians.

Basketball: WNBA Finals

The first game of the WNBA finals series was a close one, the Minnesota Lynx pipping the New York Liberty by just two points. This seemed to get the Liberty’s players riled up, as they crushed their opponents by a whopping 14-point margin in Game 2, which finished 80-66. Breanna Stewart and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton starred for New York as they both took their points tallies into the 20s.

As the action moves on to Minnesota’s home venue, the Target Center in Minneapolis, the series is finely poised. New York have never won the WNBA championship before. Could this be their year? It may well be worth staying up late to enjoy some top-class basketball and find out.

Basketball: NBA

With their 2024 NBA finals triumph, the Boston Celtics pulled ahead of the LA Lakers in the record books – the two had been tied on 17 championships apiece. This season the Celtics will be looking to put clear air between them and their west coast rivals on that list, and with a squad packed full of superstars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, they’re the firm favourites.

Boston begin their 2024/25 campaign in the season opener at home to the Knicks. If you don’t fancy staying up till all hours to catch the NBA action, you can see the LA Clippers at the Denver Nuggets at 10pm on 26 October and then the Indiana Pacers host the Philadelphia 76ers at 7.30pm the following day.

Australian Rules Football: AFL Women’s

One of the longest-established sports clubs in Australia, North Melbourne were founded all the way back in 1869. And as if that didn’t seal their place as part of the fabric of Australian society, their emblem is, yes, a kangaroo. The women’s team joined the AFLW in its third season proper and have been steadily improving since then, reaching the Grand Final in 2023. They lost to Brisbane Lions on that occasion, but this year they’re top of the table and on the hunt for glory.

With Emma Kearney – one of the all-time greats of women’s Aussie Rules – leadingthe squad, we wouldn’t bet against them. However, they’ve got a couple of tricky away games to negotiate ahead of the finals, against Essendon and Adelaide, which you can see live as part of TNT Sports’ comprehensive AFLW coverage.

Sailing: America’s Cup

British interest in sailing is often reserved for the Olympic Games – remember the heroics from Ben Ainslie, Saskia Clark, Hannah Mills and others at London 2012 – and round-the-world voyages by Ellen MacArthur, but the sport is having a moment right now thanks to GB reaching the America’s Cup for the first time since 1964.

The crew of the Britannia are in for a tough competition against the defending champs, New Zealand in the Taihoro, and the Kiwis have had the better of the early stages. But there’s still plenty of racing left in the waters of the Mediterranean, off the coast of Catalonia, and you can follow it with live coverage on TNT Sports.

Badminton: BWF World Tour

Viktor Axelsen is one of the most decorated badminton players in the sport’s history and has spent more than 180 weeks as world number one. So it must chafe at the Dane somewhat that he has managed to win his home tournament only once, in 2021. In 2022 he was knocked out in the quarter-final by Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew, and last year he was forced to pull out through injury after winning his first-round match.

So to say he’ll be determined to win this prestigious event would be an understatement, especially as Weng Hongyang won’t be defending his title. Women’s champ Chen Yufei isn’t participating either, a great opportunity for top seed An Se-young of South Korea to win her first Denmark Open title.
