“This has been my obsession!”

“This has been my obsession!”

Co-director Lynn Novick chats exclusively to Virgin TV Edit about PBS’s epic documentary series The Vietnam War

Get ready to delve deeper than ever before into one of history’s most divisive wars

The Vietnam War, Wednesdays from 11 April, 9pm, PBS America (CH 276)

How much do you really know about the bloody conflict that defined an era? Using interviews, rare archive footage and secret US government recordings, this critically acclaimed documentary series for PBS from long-time collaborators Lynn Novick and Ken Burns sheds new light on the Vietnam War. And now, for the first time in the UK, the full-length version is to be broadcast on PBS America (after showing in a cut-down version on the BBC) – that’s 18 gripping hours of television.

From the incredible attention to detail and stunning visuals, to the evocative soundtrack and deft handling of harrowing subject matter, this is immersive television at its finest. Described by the Guardian as “one of the highest achievements of factual programme-making”, it’s now being shown in full on PBS after the BBC aired the shorter international version in 2017 – and not surprisingly, the extra footage makes it even more impressive.

Ahead of the first episode’s premiere on Wednesday 11 April, we spoke with co-director Novick to learn more about this landmark series…
