A sporting spectacle that’s right on cue

BBC pundit John Parrott gives us the lowdown on the World Snooker Championship 2019

The former world champion reveals who he expects to set the baize ablaze when the action gets under way in Sheffield

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when snooker fans stay glued to the telly for 17 days of World Championship action and newcomers stumbling onto the addictive drama wonder how they got by without it.

The best players on the planet are ready to go head to head for the chance to achieve immortality (and, more tangibly, a winner’s cheque for £500,000) at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield – and you can follow every audacious long pot, momentum-shifting miss, and nail-biting final frame live on the BBC.

Last year, Mark Williams won a truly gripping final against John Higgins to claim his third world title. But can the wily Welshman become only the third player to successfully defend his crown in over two decades? He’ll be up against some steely competition in Yorkshire.

As always, five-time champion Ronnie O’Sullivan heads to Sheffield as the man to beat. With his mesmerising mix of unpredictability, flair and determination, “The Rocket” remains the sport’s biggest draw. Chasing down Stephen Hendry’s record of seven World Championships, you can be sure that O’Sullivan will be as single-minded as ever to go the distance on the biggest stage of them all.

Another man who knows what it takes to go all the way at the Crucible is 1991 winner John Parrott. The former world champion, who will again be part of the BBC team for this year’s tournament, tells us who he expects to triumph, what he enjoys most about covering the World Championship, and what was going through his head when he lifted the famous trophy.
