Birmingham is your destination for a must-watch sporting event...
Birmingham Grand Prix, Saturday 18 August, 1.15pm, BBC One/HD (CH 101/108)
Parting can be such sweet sorrow, particularly if you’re saying cheerio to a bona fide sporting legend.
British long jump hero Greg Rutherford will be leaping in front of a home crowd for the last time on Saturday 18 August when he competes in the hotly anticipated Birmingham Grand Prix, live on BBC One.
The former Olympic, World and European champion announced earlier this year that he would be hanging up his spikes at the end of the season following a glittering career. We’re not crying, we’ve just got something in our eye.
But Rutherford’s participation isn’t the only reason to tune into this one-day extravaganza at the Alexander Stadium. It’s part of the IAAF’s prestigious Diamond League series, and there are plenty more superstars ready to strut their stuff on the big stage.
From South African track icon Caster Semenya and American sprinter Noah Lyles (the fastest man in the world over 100m and 200m in 2018), to long jumpers Luvo Manyonga of South Africa and Juan Miguel Echeverria of Cuba, it’s going to be an incredible day of athletics action.

Plus, with plenty more events on throughout the year, keeping up to speed with the athletics scene has never been easier…
