Exeter Chiefs host Gloucester Rugby in a crucial European Champions Cup tie, live on Channel 4

The pressure will be on both teams when they lock horns at Sandy Park

Exeter Chiefs v Gloucester Rugby, Saturday 8 December, 12.30pm, Channel 4/HD (CH 104/141)

The European Champions Cup will have a distinctly West Country feel this Saturday, as domestic rivals Exeter and Gloucester face off in a pivotal Pool 2 encounter, live on Channel 4.

Put simply, this is a must-win match for both teams, who have struggled to hold their own in this season’s edition of European club rugby’s elite tournament.

Winless Exeter currently sit at the bottom of the group with three points, while Gloucester are perched just one place and one point above them. But for all their shortcomings in the tournament so far, it bears mentioning that Pool 2 is tougher than a tackle from an 18-stone prop.

Having been drawn alongside French champions Castres and two-time winners Munster, it was always going to be difficult for either Exeter or Gloucester to progress to the knockout stage. Both sides remain within touching distance of the top two, however, which makes Saturday’s showdown even more important.

In terms of game-changing players, Exeter fly-half Gareth Steenson (who is among the top point-scorers in this season’s tournament) will have a huge say on the outcome. For Gloucester, look no further than fly-half Danny Cipriani to grab the headlines.

It’s gearing up to be an intense battle on the pitch this weekend, but who will keep their cool and grind out that vital victory? Tune in to Channel 4 to find out.
