Katie Taylor is aiming for legendary status as she stakes a claim to Chantelle Cameron’s belts this Saturday. Read on to find out how you can purchase the fight on DAZN with Virgin Media

By Chris Miller, Feature Writer

Remember that kid at school who was annoyingly good at every sport they tried? That was Katie Taylor. A strong runner, she also excelled at Gaelic football and the Gaelic sport of camogan, and went on to play football for the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and senior level, winning numerous trophies with her club Peamount United.

But boxing was her first love, and she ultimately gave up her promising football career to focus on the sport full time. Coached by her dad Pete, himself a pro boxer, she tore through the amateur ranks and won virtually every tournament she entered – including gold at the London 2012 Olympics. She turned pro in 2016 and she’s still undefeated. And since beating Belgium’s Delfine Persoon in 2019, she’s been the undisputed lightweight champion of the world.

But Taylor wants more. And you can see if she achieves that, live on DAZN with Virgin Media on Saturday 20 May. Here’s what you need to know about her upcoming clash with Chantelle Cameron.

More than being the undisputed world champion? What else is there?

Being the undisputed world champion at two weights. Taylor (pictured above) defended her lightweight world titles against Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden last April, headlining the bill in a match-up described as “the biggest women’s fight of all time”. The two were due a rematch in 2023, but Serrano had to pull out through injury.

Undeterred, Taylor went on Instagram to publicly challenge undisputed super lightweight champ Chantelle Cameron. The Northampton fighter, who’s also unbeaten, agreed to put her six belts on the line.

Where is the fight taking place?

The 3Arena in Dublin, making it the first time Taylor has fought professionally in her own country. All her fights have been in England or the US, except for a 2017 win over Anahí Ester Sánchez in Cardiff, so this promises to be a memorable homecoming. “It’s incredible that after 22 fights I’m finally making my homecoming fight,” Taylor says. “Big-time boxing is coming back to Ireland and not with just an ordinary fight – it’s two undisputed champions going head to head.”

Taylor must be confident of victory on home territory, then?

It’s fair to say Taylor is always confident of victory. But she has definitely not been trash-talking Cameron (pictured above). “She has a spotless career, undisputed champion, and she has the style to make this another epic,” were Taylor’s generous words. “I do expect a tough fight obviously, but please God I’ll be going home a two-weight undisputed champion.”

Cameron, the first undisputed women’s champion from the UK, has been equally complimentary about her opponent in the build-up. “All thanks to Katie because women’s boxing is flying and if it wasn’t for Katie and [US three-weight world champion] Claressa [Shields], none of us women would be here. Katie is pound-for-pound the best women’s boxer there is. And if I can win, I can walk away from boxing one day and think, ‘I took out the best there is’.”

Who’s the favourite?

Most bookmakers have Taylor just ahead, even though a boxer moving up a weight class is generally considered to be at a disadvantage. Most experts agree that they wouldn’t be surprised by a Cameron victory.

“It’s definitely a risk [for Taylor going up to light heavyweight] but that’s what champions do, they take risks, and Katie Taylor has never shied away from a challenge,” says rival fighter Mikaela Mayer, who predicts a close contest. “It’s hard to look past someone like Katie because she is so experienced and adjusts so well. Even when she’s down, she comes back and adjusts. But I think Cameron has a very good chance of beating her.”
