Virgin TV Edit meets… Al Murray!

We speak exclusively to the comedian about his new show Al Murray’s Great British Pub Quiz on Quest

Teams from across the UK are battling it out for ultimate quizzing glory in this new series

Al Murray’s Great British Pub Quiz, Thursday 14 March, 10pm, Quest/HD (CH 172/215)

When Al Murray isn’t bashing our continental neighbours or putting the world to rights over a warm pint of lager as his Pub Landlord alter ego, you can find him hosting brand new series Al Murray’s Great British Pub Quiz on Quest. Even without the burgundy blazer, you just can’t keep the man away from the boozer.

Missed the first episode? Then let’s get you bang up to speed. Each week, two teams from the UK’s finest pubs battle it out for quizzing supremacy, with the whole thing overseen by Murray in front of a studio audience. The prize? One thousand pounds in cash and – much more importantly – a commemorative tankard.

A host of celebrity team captains are on hand to help the contestants out, with some of TV’s funniest folk providing their knowledge and telling a few gags along the way. We’re talking Hugh Dennis, Kerry Godliman, Phill Jupitus, Craig Charles and many more.

And what’s a pub quiz without a barman? Assisting Murray will be Shaun Williamson, aka Barry from EastEnders. A brainiac in his own right, Williamson has won Celebrity Mastermind, Celebrity Pointless, Celebrity Eggheads and The Chase. If only he’d used his noggin when he was going out with Janine! Williamson’s role is to keep score and go head to head with a team captain in a high-stakes round called Beat the Barman.

Episode 2 airs on Thursday 14 March, but before you settle down to watch it with a packet of nuts and half a shandy, who better to tell us more about the show than the mighty Murray himself? From his dream pub quiz team to his favourite bar snack, no beer mat is left unturned…
