As Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond conclude their adventures in The Grand Tour: One For The Road on Prime Video, we look back at their best bits
By Charlotte Briggs, Staff Writer
Can you hear that? It’s the sound of a million hearts breaking around the world, as Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are departing from The Grand Tour series.
For more than two decades, this terrific trio have been raising raucous hell on our screens, beginning their co-presenting tenure in 2003 on multi-award-winning car show Top Gear before heading up The Grand Tour in 2016. Since then, we’ve enjoyed their lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry and school-boy tomfoolery as they’ve galivanted across the globe in search of adventure and, ahem, wisdom.
However, all good things must come to an end. And for Clarkson, Captain Slow and Hamster, that means going out in style in a feature-length road trip across Zimbabwe. Their chariots of choice? The cars that they’ve always dreamed of owning – a 1982 Lancia Montecarlo, a 1974 Ford Capri 3-litre and a 1974 Triumph Stag. Swish.
The Grand Tour: One For The Road promises to be a swashbuckling adventure of epic proportions, as our trio drive through stunning landscapes of lush mountains, dry plains and rough terrains, while encountering some of the local wildlife such as elephants, giraffes and even a crocodile-infested lake.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a classic road trip without a challenge or two to test their patience. But any motoring mishaps, haphazard detours and tricky customs offices simply lead our trio to their shared favourite location, where they bid an emotional farewell to their time together on The Grand Tour.
Although it’s been confirmed that The Grand Tour will continue without Clarkson, May and Hammond, we have no doubt that these three petrolheads have saved their greatest adventure till last. Don’t miss The Grand Tour: One For The Road from Friday 13 September on Apps > Prime Video.
To mark the end of the trio’s era on our screens, we’ve rounded up our favourite moments of mischief from across The Grand Tour series. Expect plenty of silly shenanigans, a hysterical prank or two and total motoring mayhem. Let’s get into it:
AKA: The Big Bang
Episode: Season 1, Episode 3 – Opera, Art And Donuts
What happens? After Clarkson loses a bet with his comrades, May and Hammond gleefully tear down his Cotswolds farmhouse and rummage through his prized possessions, before blowing the whole thing to smithereens.
AKA: Sleeping Beauty
Episode: Season 1, Episode 8 – The Beach (Buggy) Boys (Part 2)
What happens? When a rhino conservation expedition goes awry and Hammond is hit by a tranquiliser dart, Clarkson and May have no choice but to suspend Hammond and his beach buggy from a helicopter to reach their next destination. A terrified Hammond wakes up mid-flight to a living nightmare.
AKA: Noah’s Ark
Episode: Season 2, Episode 11 – Feed The World
What happens? As part of their pledge to tackle world hunger, the trio agree to transport live fish to those in need via their vehicles. The result? A disgruntled May getting soaked by his “May-quarium” every time he hits the brakes and a now viral meme of Clarkson and Hammond in uncontrollable hysterics.
AKA: The Great Flood
Episode: Season 4, Episode 3 – The Grand Tour Presents… Lochdown
What happens? What’s a classic road trip without a good old-fashioned prank? Tired of May disrupting their Scottish adventure with continuous stops for fuel, Clarkson and Hammond can’t resist flooding his cow print caravan and leaving May swept up in their antics.
AKA: A Touch Of Frost
Episode: Season 5, Episode 1 – The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick
What happens? Another practical joke from The Grand Tour’s hall of fame, Hammond exacts his revenge on Clarkson’s previous trickery by freezing Clarkson’s entire car solid. Chaos ensues…
AKA: The House Of Wax
Episode: Season 5, Episode 2 – The Grand Tour: Eurocrash
What happens? Sometimes it’s not all about the grand escapades but simply the camaraderie. And watching Clarkson and May escort Hammond around his first-ever wax museum visit leaves us in stitches every time. Those laughs are infectious!
