What is Virgin Media Essential broadband?

A package to help you stay connected

Essential broadband helps you get online for £15 a month with a 15Mbps fibre broadband speed. It’s a broadband-only package available if you’re already a Virgin Media customer and you receive Universal Credit.

15Mbps average download speed

Essential broadband comes with download and upload speeds averaging 15Mbps and 2Mbps.

There’s no traffic management to slow the package down, even at peak times.

£15 per month and no annual price rises

We’ll keep you connected at £15 a month for as long as you’re eligible. This means the price of your Essential broadband pack won’t change while you’re receiving Universal Credit payments.

A broadband-only package

Our Essential broadband pack is a broadband-only service. So if you’re currently taking TV and/or home phone with us, these services will be cancelled. If you need your phone line for things like telehealth devices and care alarms, Essential broadband might not be right for you.

Flexible 30-day contracts

Essential broadband is a 30-day rolling contract. So whenever you’re ready to go back to your usual Virgin Media services, just give us a ring and we’ll sort it all out for you. We won’t ask about your financial situation, but the price of your usual services will not be the same as before. After that, if you ever want to switch to Essential broadband again, you can just reapply the same way.

Available to those who receive Universal Credit

To qualify for this pack, we just need the account owner to show us some proof that they receive Universal Credit before we can set them up.

To apply, just fill in an online application form and we’ll email you back with how to complete the eligibility checks. As soon as they go through, we’ll swap you over and you won’t have to pay any extra fees or charges for changing from your current Virgin Media services.

FAQ's

Our Essential broadband pack is a broadband-only service we offer to customers receiving Universal Credit to make sure they can get online and stay connected at a low cost.

If you meet the eligibility requirements and switch to Essential broadband, you’ll be charged £15 a month. Every 12 months we'll ask you to provide evidence that you still receive Universal Credit and if you do, you'll continue to be charged £15 a month. If you no longer receive Universal Credit, or you can’t provide evidence when we ask for it, the monthly price will go up to £23 a month.

Of course. Just give us a ring whenever you’re ready to go back to your usual Virgin Media services and we’ll sort it all out for you. We won’t ask about your financial situation, but the price of your usual services will not be the same as before. After that, if you change your mind and want to switch to Essential broadband again, you can reapply anytime as long as you’re still eligible.

Once your eligibility checks go through for Essential broadband, we'll swap you over right away and you won't have to pay any extra fees or charges for changing from your current Virgin Media services.

Only the person receiving Universal Credit who’s registered as the account owner of the Virgin Media account – or someone approved to take care of the account on their behalf – can submit the application. Once you've given us all the details we need to put through your application, we’ll check the information and process your switch to Essential broadband. We might call you to confirm your details and make sure you’re up to date with how Essential broadband could differ from your current service.

You'll need to send us evidence that you’re eligible for Universal Credit before we can move you to Essential broadband. We'll send you more info on this after you submit your application. Please note, only the account owner – or someone approved to take care of the account on their behalf – can submit the application for Essential broadband.

Just fill in the form here to apply and follow the instructions in the email we'll send you back. Please make sure you use the same email address that’s linked to your Virgin Media account, pop it in correctly and check that any replies don't end up in your spam folder.

To move to Essential broadband, you’ll have to change your Oomph SIM to a regular mobile plan with us or cancel it. Your mobile plan will still be subject to our annual price rise and you’ll still have to pay off your Freestyle loan for your mobile phone if you have one.
