How to check and reboot the router

Checking your wired (Ethernet) setup

If your computer is connected to the router by the yellow Ethernet cable, make sure that your cables are plugged in like this:

  • Power cable - make sure that it’s connected securely to the router, and plugged in and switched on at the wall (not shown in the diagram below).
  • Ethernet cable – make sure this is securely plugged in to your computer and the router.
  • Telephone cable – make sure this is connected securely to the router, and plugged into the ADSL filter.
  • ADSL filter – make sure this is plugged into the main telephone socket in your house.

If you still cannot connect, try a reboot by following the steps further down this page.

Checking your wireless setup

If your computer is connected to the router over a wireless connection, make sure that the appropriate cables are plugged in, as follows:

  • Power cable - make sure that it’s connected securely to the router, and plugged in and switched on at the wall.
  • Telephone cable – make sure this is connected securely to the router, and plugged into the ADSL filter.
  • ADSL filter – make sure this is plugged into the main telephone socket in your house.

If you still can’t connect, try rebooting. Here’s how.

Rebooting your hardware

To reboot your broadband equipment:

  1. Switch off the power to the wireless router (or modem) at the wall, or unplug it if there is no power socket switch.
  2. Shutdown your computer.
  3. Wait at least 20-30 seconds.
  4. Turn on the router (or modem) – but don’t turn on your computer yet! Wait at least two minutes so that the router (or modem) has had time to connect to the server.
  5. Now turn on your computer.

If you still can’t connect, go to the next step.
