What is fibre broadband?
Fibre is a superfast broadband connection that travels at almost the speed of light.
Fibre-optic cables deliver the signal to the local cabinet on the street using pulses of light, and then a second type of cable takes the fibre broadband the rest of the way into the home.
Coaxial cables do this for our Virgin Media Fibre Broadband as we’re a cable network, but traditional FTTC (or Fibre to the cabinet) networks use phone lines instead.
Why should I get a fibre broadband deal?
- Faster internet Fibre broadband can transfer data at a much faster rate across the network than traditional copper wire networks.
- More reliable Standard broadband is more likely to be affected by electrical interference or long distances on its way to the local cabinet on the street, than fibre broadband.

Our Virgin Media fibre-optic cable connects to the local cabinet on the street, then a coaxial cable directs fibre broadband onwards into your home, for a superfast, reliable connection.
When you have Virgin Media Fibre Broadband, you don’t need a phone line. We don’t use them in any part of our cable network, not even to power our landline service. However, if you’re with a different network that is FTTC (or Fibre to the cabinet), you probably will need a phone line, yes.
Standard fibre broadband, or Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC), is when a fibre-optic cable connects the network to your local area and a copper wire delivers the fibre broadband into your home. Our Virgin Media Fibre Broadband network is unique – technically, we’re a cable network, not FTTC – because we replaced the traditional copper wire with coaxial cable.
Yes. Choose any home broadband deal and you’ll get connected to superfast fibre-optic broadband. We’re the UK’s most widely available broadband network.
Compared to traditional ADSL, or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (an older type of broadband), fibre broadband can offer faster, more reliable speeds. Fibre-optic cables can send more information, as they’re made from glass or plastic rather than copper, and data is transferred more efficiently using pulses of light. Therefore, streaming is smooth on fast fibre broadband speeds, and more devices can connect to the internet at the same time.
Our fastest fibre broadband package helps you download – files, movies, games – at 1,130Mbps (average speed), 19 times faster than the UK average. Gig1 Fibre Broadband is 16 times faster than Sky and BT’s fastest widely available speeds. And we have several other options.

Ultrafast broadband is at least 300Mbps fast (download speed). We offer three choices: our ultrafast M350, M500 or Gig1 Fibre Broadband package.
Superfast broadband is at least 24Mbps fast (download speed), according to the UK Government – or 30Mbps to 300Mbps, if you follow the definition from Ofcom and the EU. We offer two choices: our superfast M125 or M250 Fibre Broadband package.
Just half an hour or so, if QuickStart's available at your address. That’s including a 10 minute break while the Virgin Media WiFi Hub starts up. Otherwise, an installation visit from one of our technicians could take around an hour, depending on the work needed to set up your fibre broadband.
Yes, some homes will need an engineer – we can come at a convenient time and install fibre broadband, usually, within an hour. However, our self-installation option may be available to you at checkout – with QuickStart the Virgin Media WiFi Hub just plugs straight in, so it’s often the fastest way to get up and running with our fibre broadband.

No setup fee
